How to add Style and Character to your New Construction Home

By Dana Tucker 1 Comment

We are very blessed to work with several custom builders in the Nashville area. I always get a kick out of walking through the house during the construction phase with the builders, homeowners and designers because I have absolutely NO VISION at this stage. They point to various open spaces of unframed walls and talk about fireplaces, moldings, doors, breakfast nooks, powder baths, etc.. and I just stand there nodding my head and smiling like a dork. Like I can totally visualize what they are talking about. It’s a good thing Brooks speaks that language and sees the big construction picture, because I’d be in trouble if it were just up to me at that phase.

Smile and look pretty like you can visualize that this will one day be a powder bathroom.
Smile and look pretty like you can visualize that this will one day be a powder bathroom.

So, at this point in the process we talk about colors, textures, and patterns. We show samples and try to leave the meeting with a clear direction on the scope of the project and the number of spaces we will be finishing. Building a new home requires home owners to make a ton of decisions in a short amount of time. Everything from flooring, to light fixtures, to exterior finishes, landscaping, windows… I just can’t imagine having the pressure to make all those choices and AND getting them all right. Adding decorative finishes to a few spaces in your newly constructed home can add warmth, texture and customization. But, after making all those OTHER decisions it might help to see a visual of how these finishes will look in your new home. That’s what I wanted to show you today.

In this recent project we left with approved samples for the elevator and the powder bath and assignments for the master bathroom, fireplace and upstairs bath. Here are a few before and after photos of the finished spaces.

Building a home is exciting. Building your dream home is an achievement of a lifetime. Invite us into the design process. I promise to smile pretty when you walk me through the framing stage AND act like I can visualize the finished product. And then, I promise that in the end Brooks will deliver something like THIS

And then we can all smile big and act like we ALL saw it just like this from the beginning. Building? Remodeling? We’d love to chat. Please fill out the form below to schedule a consultation.

Want to see the other side of the kitchen I posted Want to see the other side of the kitchen I posted yesterday? We reworked the white cabinet into a concealed coffee bar. We wrapped it in stained walnut and added an aged mirror front. Definite style upgrade.

In this kitchen we replaced the range and hood, installed new counters and backsplash and painted the cabinets. Don’t miss the fabulous teacup chandelier. The perfect update for my fancy teacup loving chef client.

For me, kitchen design always starts with sink pla For me, kitchen design always starts with sink placement. Whenever possible I always like to place the sink under a window. Also, whenever possible I love to open up the windows as wide and tall as I can. Nothing adds more to the design of a kitchen than natural light. Start there and the rest flows into place.

Shopping for a new refrigerator? The biggest upgra Shopping for a new refrigerator? The biggest upgrade you can make in that space is to NOT get ice and water in the door. A refrigerator is so much cleaner looking without it. And if possible, adding cabinetry panels to your refrigerator is a complete style upgrade. Just order your fridge “panel ready”. A good carpenter can guide you through completing that look.
