We were recently asked to create an aged crumbling concrete wall finish for the 2014 Nashville Parade of Homes at Kings’ Chapel.
The designers, Kara Blalock and Lauren Blalock (sisters-in-law) had a very clear vision for the home built by Gregg & Rains Builders. The home would have lots of rustic elements like aged barn wood ceilings and a tobacco stick ceiling from the designer’s family farm. Kara and Lauren sent us this photo as inspiration for the dining room wall finish.
Artists In Action
It was a stunner!!! And we knew just the products that could achieve that finish. We had recently returned from the International Decorative Artisan’s League’s National Convention where Brooks had worked with Metropolis Ivas products and taken classes with Nashville’s own, Kathy Wear and Krista Vind from Destin, Florida. I can not say enough good things about these two women. They are generous with their knowledge, vivacious, and such creative leaders in our decorative artisan community. As a national trainer for Metropolis Ivas, Kathy is always working on making samples for decorative wall finishes. I sent Kathy a photo of the finish and asked her if she had ideas on how to pull it together. She jumped right in and started playing with product and creating samples.
Once the samples were approved and the project was scheduled we were honored to find out that Krista Vind would be coming in from Florida and our friend Teresa Brown from Memphis TN to assist Brooks and Kathy with the wall installation. This multi-layer finish took four artists three days to complete.
We were honored to have such amazingly talented artists come together to work on this project. We lovingly called our collaboration, “Artists In Action”. Here is a video of the process.
THANK YOU to Metropolis Ivas for graciously donating the products for this finish, Metropolis Factor and Soul Cement.
THANK YOU to our Artists in Action: Kathy Wear, Krista Vind, Teresa Brown and of course, Brooks Tucker.
This finish would not have been achieved with out the fabulous design vision of Kara and Lauren of ReFresh Home. The way they finished out the room was perfection.
My favorites are the big mirror that reflects the finish around the room and the blue ceiling.
Many thanks to Gregg & Rains Builders for the opportunity to work in this gorgeous house.
The house has been VERY well received by Parade of Homes visitors. It received a People’s Choice award for BEST INTERIOR DESIGN and our dining room finish won for BEST FAUX FINISH. Kari Ann Wood of Thistlewood Farms Blog wrote a post about the house that has gone viral. It has been “pinned” over 25,000 times on Pinterest. It was also the first house to sell in the Parade of Homes. So proud of the whole team!!!

Fantastic. I would love to see some of the other rooms you described. Its inspiring to see a designer do something so rustic in a new home. Its old but fresh and not Old World, which I’m over! I enjoy your blogs immensely.
