Welcome to Tucker Fireplace Makeover 2.0. I'm a firm believer that personal style evolves and changes over the years. When we moved into this house five years ago I wanted a white and gray farmhouse style home.
We worked with a lot of neutrals, burlap, industrial pieces and chippy antiques with mostly whites and grays. Think Chip and Joanna Gaines- Fixer Upper style. Our first fireplace makeover incorporated that style with a heavily glazed and painted brick surround and bookcases. We placed metal from an old rusty tin roof above the fireplace and used some weathered barn wood for a mantel. You can read about that makeover HERE.
A couple of years ago I started phasing out the farmhouse stuff and bringing in more color, more vintage, more Boho, and some Mid Century Modern pieces. I've known that fireplace did not reflect my evolving style for a while, but I couldn't get Brooks on board for a change. After all, he had blood, sweat and tears in the last project. The rusty tin had been his design contribution and he was still very proud of it. He worked for several days on the painting and glazing. He wasn't going to scrap his own design.
Black Fireplace Makeover
So, I got crafty. I waited until we went on vacation and asked one of our paint crew to come over and do the painting while we were out of town. That way Brooks didn't have to participate in the un-doing of his creation. I think it was easier for him to swallow that way. I asked Ron to take down the tin and repaint the brick and the bookcases in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite. Pretty dramatic change, don't you think?
I love the way the black fireplace and bookcases really showcase the items on the shelves, they really pop now. It looks like our fireplace is all grown up now. It has swagger and I like it. We've finally done right by those awesome vintage shell chairs. They really were not at home in front of the old fireplace. I imagine myself sitting in one of those chairs, reading a book and sipping a martini in front of a roaring fire.
