Tile, Termites, & Flooding- ORC- WEEK 3

By Dana Tucker 8 Comments

Welcome back to the week three update of our basement bathroom remodel. We are guest participants in the One Room Challenge. If you missed it, you can catch up with WEEK ONE HERE and WEEK TWO HERE. This week we are sharing our new bathroom flooring.

FLOODING

Let me back up– DANG IT HARVEY!! As in Hurricane Harvey. Remember him? He rolled through Nashville with little consequence after wreaking havoc in Texas. Except for our house. We ended up with a flooded basement. Here’s a video I posted on Facebook.

The funny thing (not really) is that this was the third time our basement had flooded since May. Two other times were due to a toilet running over. So, it forced us to think about flooring that could withstand future flooding. Tile is the best option for areas prone to flooding. It also gave us an opportunity to replace the toilet and hopefully solve that problem at the same time.

When we pulled up the linoleum we were less than pleased to find that there were two layers of linoleum installed on top of each other with moisture in between. And under that was a paper underlayment stuck to the concrete slab.

TERMITES

But- the REAL SURPRISE waiting for us was when our really amazing tile installer asked us if we had TERMITES? Say what???

Zach Ridout from ZR Tile- THE BEST!

He said he thought he saw one come out of the wall.  We did see TERMITE damage we found behind the base boards but we thought that was from damage from the previous owners who had the house treated 6 years ago. So we had the exterminator come and do a spot treatment ($350) just to be on the safe side.

TILE

We installed white octagon and dot tile. I’ve always loved the clean timeless look of this tile.

We used a charcoal grout because I wanted it to have a sharp contrast and also tie into the black vanity.  This tile is budget friendly at less than $3 a square foot.

I’m so happy with how it turned out.

Since everything on the floor in the bathroom closet got wet from the flood, we thought this would be a good time to have some shelves installed to get ourselves organized.

I’ll be linking this post over at the ONE ROOM CHALLENGE where there are over two hundred bloggers participating. You can follow along by clicking on the logo below.

If you are wondering what our plan is for the rest of the flooring in the basement after the flood– so are we. We are actually ignoring it and acting like it never happened. If we don’t die from a black mold related disease WE WIN. Not really, we think it dried out pretty well with 2 de-humidifiers running for a week. But we do hope to replace those Pergo floors with tile eventually. Remodeling is expensive people.

Next week I’ll be sharing info on our Lighting, Mirror and Accessories.

Our basement has flooded many times – it flooded again this past week during my ORC basement makeover. We put tile in the basement years ago and so far, so good, it has been okay through several floods. Walls not faring so well – yeah mold is a problem there now!
