This modern cottage kitchen remodel is an amazing transformation of an existing space. We removed a wall and completely reworked the space for a casual open concept design.
Sometimes I have to have a really honest conversation with clients about where not to spend money when updating their kitchen. I was originally called by these clients to provide a consult for painting their existing kitchen cabinets. They said a full remodel was on their radar, but they wanted to see if they could put it off by doing a small update by painting the cabinets. After learning what wasn’t working for them in this kitchen it became obvious to our clients that a full remodel was needed.
These clients have the most charming cottage in the heart of Brentwood, TN. One of the reasons a full gut remodel made sense was that the value of their home has almost tripled since they bought it over a decade ago. So, a new kitchen would be a solid investment and also would be expected by buyers if they ever wanted to sell their home in that price range.
Our plans included removing the wall between the den and the kitchen.
That opened up the space and let in much needed light from the back windows. They already had amazing beams in the den that you could now see from the kitchen. And that diamond window dutch door stole my heart. I offered to buy it from them many times. I’m glad they turned me down because it is exactly the door they need for this space.
When we took the wall down, we didn’t need the separate entry to the den from the back hall.
We were able to close that off and add a small butler’s pantry with a beverage fridge and additional storage.
For the kitchen itself we designed an extra large island for gathering, prepping, and storage. The back of the island features touch latch cabinets for additional concealed storage.
The windows on the back wall had to be replaced with much smaller windows so we could center the range hood on the wall and pack in the storage with drawers, upon drawers on the bottom.
I fell in love with the look of these GE Cafe appliances with the brass handles and knew they would be the perfect fit for our modern cottage kitchen.
We waited over a year for these appliances. We also waited about a year for our contractor. These clients win the patience award for sure.
The vintage lighting was the perfect selection to light up the island and complete our modern vintage kitchen.
My clients say their remodel has changed the way they live in their home. They are excited to host family get togethers and groups of friends. Two things they avoided in the past. I believe strongly that an updated space can improve your quality of life. Don’t wait!
