This kitchen remodel is a great example of an elegant update that worked within the existing floor plan and cabinet layout to produce beautiful, functional results. These clients have a lovely home and for the most part the kitchen before was beautiful. But over time, things had started to break down and our clients decided it was time for some improvements. This kitchen had the trifecta of outdated elements that we see in most kitchens designed prior to 2015.

Outdated Kitchen Trifecta
- Microwave over the cooktop
- Two-tiered high top bar
- Busy granite countertops
In addition to the obvious items above we also needed to address storage. This is a family who cooks and loves to entertain. They needed better options for food storage and a place to hide appliances. They also asked for a place to display family heirloom treasures they had acquired over the years. They wanted to make these upgrades while working with their existing cabinets.

My first time laying eyes on this kitchen I could see the perfect hood alcove could be nestled between the refrigerator and the double ovens. That was the perfect lineup for a new cooktop, oversized hood with ventilation, spice storage and a beautiful hood and backsplash. We replaced the double ovens with a speed oven/microwave and wall oven combo and installed a panel ready refrigerator.

We now had an elegant and function packed hood wall.

But we still needed more storage.
How to work in additional storage
On my very first kitchen consult meetings I’m always looking for blank walls that can handle built in cabinetry. In this home I found two blank walls begging for built ins. The first was to the right of the double ovens.

We designed a storage pantry to situate under the windows on this wall. This kitchen had very few large drawers so we packed this new cabinet with lots of drawers to make organizing easy. We also designed an open hutch in the middle so our homeowners could display family treasures like a collection of water/tea pitchers belonging to a cherished grandmother. The old window trim didn’t fit with our new updated kitchen design so we designed and executed new window trim molding.

We also created a space for gathering and bible study under the window looking out into the beautiful private back yard.
The second wall that was begging for a built in was the back wall in the adjoining family room.

It was the perfect spot for a dry bar with a built in ice machine and beverage fridge. Painted a deep rich navy/black and accented with unlacquered brass and aged mirror this space added a much needed functional entertaining space to the home.
Integrating the design with landscape
We wanted this remodel to integrate seamlessly with the lush green landscape view outside the windows. So we used a soft nature inspired palette of neutral paint colors, unlacquered brass hardware, and touches of black.

We used greens and blues in our art and painted cabinetry. The show stopping backsplash behind the hood is black mist leathered granite rounding out the nature inspired natural elements.
What do you think? Could you see yourself in this kitchen?
