One of the things that can seriously date your kitchen is a cathedral style cabinet door. When I see this door style I can immediately tell your cabinets were installed between 1975-1990.
If you are on a tight budget, painting these cabinets is a great update like what we did in our own kitchen.
Kitchen Cabinet Refacing
But, if budget allows, refacing these doors with a new modern profile door will give your kitchen a completely new look without a complete remodel hassle and price. Here is a kitchen we recently updated.
Before:
We replaced all the doors with updated shaker style doors.
We removed the microwave and added a custom stove hood.
We re-worked and modified the kitchen desk area and created a microwave/coffee station with new deep drawers for additional storage.
We installed pull out storage, soft close hinges and new hardware.
We painted everything to unify the modifications and update the color.
All for 1/2 the price that was quoted by the big box store.
In full disclosure, the big box store quote did include a veneer to be placed over the cabinet boxes and we didn’t do that. But, if you’re painting your cabinets, you don’t need it. Painting ties everything together.
Here’s a video of this kitchen makeover and an interview with the homeowner.
I’m in love with that sofa in her kitchen!!! As a matter of fact, I love her whole house! Here are a few more images of her home.
Is cabinet refacing right for you? I put together this handy dandy chart to show you the differences in painting, refacing, and replacing cabinets.
One HUGE thing to consider in a full kitchen remodel is the price of new countertops. And quartz is the new countertop of choice. Make sure you include $6000+ in your budget for new quartz countertops. New countertops mean you need a new sink, new faucet and a plumber to install them. All these little things add up in a full kitchen remodel.
