To say that we have had a busy 4th quarter would be a huge understatement. Not only did we have the immense privilege of providing decorative faux finishes in two premiere home tours, we also bought a house that wasn’t for sale, sold our house without a realtor, moved, and underwent a major kitchen renovation all while juggling the usual client relationship and money making balls all at the same time. Whew!!! That’s me taking a huge breath. I know there will be more blog posts to follow with details of the above projects, but today I wanted to recap our faux finish and decorative painting projects at the Nashville Southern Living Showcase Home built by Castle Homes.
We ended up providing faux finishes and decorative painting in several different areas of the home. We had the pleasure of working with the extremely talented and super organized, Kristen Finney of Finney Interiors. Kristen invited me to the first meeting with the builder and designers to discuss the rooms to be designed. The designers got to submit their request for the rooms they wanted to design. Kristen and I were immediately on the same page. Both of us being avid readers of Southern Living Magazine, we knew that outdoor spaces were a huge focus for the magazine. We knew that if Southern Living did a story on the house it would include the outdoor space. Also, working in our favor was the use of the Nanawall in the home’s design. This amazing door is a wall of windows that completely folds and slides to one side to create a completely open living space. It was the entry wall to the covered patio. We knew the outdoor room was the space we wanted.
When it came time to put the design plan for the outdoor space together I suggested a concrete overlay patterned design. I had the pleasure of meeting Melanie Royals at a conference earlier this year and she and I became fast friends. I am a huge admirer of her stencil designs. She is a genius in the art of applying color and pattern. She is the manufacturer of Modello Designs. These are one time use masking stencils that are perfect for large area applications. The stencils adhere to the concrete and you are able to trowel and paint your designs through the stencil, peel up the stencil, and voila you have an amazing custom finished pattern.
Melanie, custom designed an IKAT Modello pattern with a chevron border for our project. Melanie, also introduced me to Katrina Johnson of Skimstone at a conference this summer. She and Melanie and I got together to brainstorm this project. Katrina and Melanie are the dream team of concrete overlay. They actually have put together some training videos of how to install a Skimstone floor with Modello patterns. So, our team consisted of Melanie Royals custom designing our pattern, Katrina Johnson of Skimstone providing the product, and Pablo Johnson also of Skimstonewho came into town to help Brooks with the project installation. Here are a few photos of the installation.
Nancy McNulty, of McNulty Communications did the P.R. for the showcase home and did an amazing job getting multiple media outlets to cover the showcase home. She also put together this video of the floor installation.
Thanks so much Nancy!!! You rock!!
We also designed a powder bathroom finish using Royal Design Studios large Chez Sheik stencil with their new Pearl Oyster stencil Creme paint base coat is Sherwin Williams Magnetic Grey- 7058.
We painted a drywall oven hood a metallic pewter finish,
we added some pink stripes outside the amazing Amanda Burdge’s guest retreat, we also finished the ceiling in the girl’s bedroom in a shimmery pearl metallic.
Many, many thanks to Castle Homes for inviting us to participate in this gorgeous showcase home, to Kristen Finney for bringing us in to provide finishes for her interior designs, to Nancy McNulty for the amazing PR, to Melanie Royals for your generosity and talent, to Katrina Johnson for your amazing Skimstone products and for loaning us Brooks’ new BFF Pablo Johnson. Brooks and Pablo spent a week together finishing the Modello Skimstone floor. I think that kind of artistry, hard work, and hours of commitment bonds people together. Thanks Pablo for coming to Nashville to help. You are welcome back anytime, we’ve got a room ready for you in the new house.
